The Adventure of the Devil's Foot

Arthur Conan Doyle

Book Description

The Adventure of the Devil's Foot is a Sherlock Holmes story written by Arthur Conan Doyle. It is set on the Cornish coast, and features the mysterious death of a nobleman, Lord Sannox. The story begins with a Mr. Mortimer Tregennis consulting Holmes and Watson about the strange death of his brother-in-law and two other visitors to the house. They had been sitting in the parlor, when suddenly all three of them had become seized with a fit of terror, and had all died within a few minutes of each other. Holmes and Watson travel to the scene of the crime to investigate. They soon discover that the cause of the deaths had been a powerful and rare African drug, called the "Devil's Foot". It had been placed in the fire by someone, and the fumes had killed the three men. Holmes and Watson look for clues, and eventually discover that the culprit is the brother-in-law's wife, Lady Sannox. She had wanted revenge for her husband's infidelity, and had decided to use the Devil's Foot as her weapon of revenge. Holmes and Watson eventually capture Lady Sannox, and she is sent to prison. The story ends with Holmes and Watson discussing the case, and marveling over the power of the Devil's Foot. It is a classic example of the detective work of Sherlock Holmes, and a great example of Arthur Conan Doyle's writing.
