The Little Engine That Could

Watty Piper

Book Description

The Little Engine That Could is a classic children’s story that teaches the value of optimism, perseverance, and self-belief. The story begins with a train carrying toys, food, and other supplies for children on the other side of a large mountain. While traveling, the engine pulling the train suddenly breaks down, leaving the train stranded at the base of the mountain. Several larger and more powerful engines pass by, but they refuse to help. One engine is too busy, another is too tired, and another believes the task is beneath it. Finally, a small blue engine approaches. Though the little engine doubts its own strength, it agrees to help after hearing how important the cargo is for the children waiting beyond the mountain. As the little engine struggles to pull the heavy train uphill, it repeats the hopeful phrase, “I think I can, I think I can.” With steady effort and positive thinking, the engine slowly climbs the mountain. At last, it reaches the top and successfully delivers the train to the children on the other side. The story emphasizes that determination, kindness, and confidence can help overcome challenges, even when the task seems too difficult at first.
