Világ ura
Jules Verne
Book Description
Master of the World (Világ ura) by Jules Verne is the 1904 sequel to Robur the Conqueror. The novel follows a mysterious and technologically advanced vehicle that appears on land, sea, and in the air, moving at astonishing speeds, causing fear and speculation in the United States. Detective John Strock is assigned to investigate the strange occurrences and follows clues leading him to the Great Eyrie, an inaccessible mountain peak that occasionally emits smoke and flames. As Strock delves deeper into the mystery, he discovers that the enigmatic vehicle, called The Terror, is a revolutionary multi-purpose machine capable of functioning as a car, boat, and aircraft. It is controlled by the brilliant yet megalomaniacal inventor Robur, who seeks to dominate the world through his superior technology. Strock eventually confronts Robur and witnesses the full power of The Terror. However, as the story reaches its climax, the machine is caught in a violent storm, struck by lightning, and ultimately destroyed. Robur’s fate remains unknown, leaving readers wondering whether he survived. This novel belongs to Verne’s later, darker works, reflecting concerns about unchecked technological advancement and the dangers of human arrogance. It explores the tension between scientific progress and ethical responsibility, highlighting the potential consequences of power-hungry individuals wielding uncontrollable technology.
